Obama’s “Call to Renewal” speech

Senator Obama’s “Call to Renewal” speech on religious faith to the Sojourners’ Conference inWashington DC, June 28, 2006 in 5 parts

Part 1 – Part 2 – Part 3 – Part 4 – Part 5

This speech is one of Obama’s best explorations of the intersection of religious faith and politics.  In it, he seeks a common ground upon which both conservatives and progressives can discuss policy issues with civility and mutual understanding.  In 2008, when Obama was running for president, James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, made this speech the centerpiece of a blistering attack on Obama’s faith, calling Obama’s views a “confused theology” linked to a “fruitcake interpretation of the Constitution.”  This caused many religious conservatives to check out the speech, and, , in turn, attack Dobson for criticisms many found baseless and misguided.
