LINK: A More Perfect Union speech, March 18, 2008, Philadelphia, PA
By March, 2008, incendiary comments by Obama’s pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, were putting Obama’s entire candidacy into jeopardy. Many voters questioned both Obama’s judgment and his patriotism in light of a series of controversial sermons Wright had given over the course of his Chicago ministry.
Obama had long wanted to give a speech on race in the campaign but his advisors had always urged against it. Now they moved forward on it, and, on March 18th in the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, Obama gave his views on the complexities of race in America in the 21st century. Many commentators and scholars have viewed it as a seminal statement on the subject and perhaps one for the history books.
